As a kid, my sister and I spent days building a raft, then setting the raft afloat in a sea of fantasy on an empty lot pretending the tall weeds were jungle cover for protection from the lagoon creatures we had escaped.
Part of being a child is dreaming and creating a world that only exists for the child. Reading is another form of creating that special world, a world where the child leaps into the fantasy and joins that world of make believe. If children are provided every game, computerized and programmed through the final click, or press of their little thumb on the button, where’s the fantasy, where’s the imagination, and most of all, where’s the child’s ability to fantasize and create their own world of escape.
How will this child grow up and be happy with alone times? How will this child imagine a better world, or escape to a better place and time when needed? Who will keep this person company when they’re alone and their electronic game has run out of battery power?
This this new electronic world robbing our young minds of creating a new world, personal excitement and new ways of changing old ways.
As a kid, there were days of bliss filled with nothing but sitting and thinking, dreaming and escaping into my own world. Then with the voice yelling “dinner’s ready,” drew me back into reality, but what a wonderful carpet ride I had just sitting on the steps dreaming, or watching a spider weave its intricate web of intrigue.
What were your daytime dreams you remember with fondness? Maybe ice skating alone, wrapped in your own world of the passing breeze when you picked up speed on the ice? Maybe riding your bike down a steep hill braking in time to stop at the corner? Or just taking a walk to the park while listening to the birds in the trees chirp? Wonderful memories are made of these things.
Dreaming is a magnificent ability. It is a form of art, creativity and an extension of our mind that gives us the ability to wonder what could be, create a magical world to expand dreams and allow spiritual feelings to enter. Open doors of understanding and create the could be existence.
